“Love yourself first and everything else falls into line. You really have to love yourself to get anything done in this world.”
~ Lucille Ball

Do you see the heart in the sun? I sure do 🙂

So yesterday, I started off the day not feeling so hot – grumbling stomach and tight muscles – and by mid morning, I was running a 101 degree fever. I am rarely sick, but when I am, I allow this time to practice metta (lovingkindness meditation).

May I be happy,
May I be free from suffering,
May I make friends with my body,
May I dwell in peace,
May I be at ease.

Being at ease, I think is the important. Adding “I wish I didn’t feel like this” only serves to add mental agitation to a body that already is struggling. Offering kind, soothing words to oneself, I believe, is the best way to offer self-care when you aren’t feeling your best. I spent the day resting, and drinking homemade lemongrass ginger mint tea.

Gratefully, I’m feeling much better this morning.

Over the years, I’ve listened to many podcasts. One that is a standout is a lecture given by Toni Bernhard, author of “How to Be Sick: A buddhist-inspired guide for the chronically ill and their caregivers.” Listening to her courageous words completely changed my perspective on how I tend to treat myself, both mentally and emotionally, when I am not feeling my best.

I share her audio, in hopes that it will help ease those times of suffering for you as well.
